Dr Jose Thomas’ has been a Consultant Physician since 1995. His background speciality is Respiratory Medicine. He specialised in Sleep Medicine and Sleep Technology and led the development of the Aneurin Bevan Sleep Centre at Nevill Hall Hospital. Established in 2015, the Aneurin Bevan Sleep Centre is currently the only advanced Sleep Medicine Centre in Wales. Dr Thomas leads sleep services for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He has experience in the full spectrum of sleep disorders and has a special interest in neurological sleep disorders, particularly Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). He has wide experience in the management of RLS refractory to standard treatment. Further, he is trained and experienced in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and has expertise in the treatment of Insomnia including CBT for insomnia, Circadian Rhythm Sleep Wake Disorders and other sleep problems with a behavioural component. He is a general respiratory physician and has special interests in asthma, chronic cough, ‘unexplained breathlessness’, COPD and interstitial lung diseases.
Sleep apnoea is the commonest reason for referral to sleep services. It usually starts as light snoring and progresses to loud snoring, shallow breathing in sleep and eventually stoppage of breathing in sleep (apnoeas). These disrupt sleep and cause unrefreshing sleep and daytime tiredness and sleepiness.
Narcolepsy is probably the best known neurological sleep disorder. Restless Legs Syndrome is much more common and mostly goes unrecognised in the community. Other neurological sleep disorders manifest as excessive sleepiness in the daytime, sleep walking, sleep terrors, acting out dreams, and other symptoms. Dr Thomas has wide experience in the diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of sleep disorders and can help you arrive at an early diagnosis and advice the most effective treatment.

It is particularly helpful in the assessment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders and some cases of insomnia.
